Lindsey Vonn Reaches for Records

Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn has won her fifth World Cup super-G title. With a current total of 19 World Cup titles, Vonn has tied legendary skier Ingemar Stenmark’s record for the highest number of crystal globes.

This totals 67 World Cup wins for Vonn, which puts her on track to reach Stenmark’s second astonishing record of 86 World Cups triumphs. Stenmark established the record in the years between 1975 and 1989. To reach that goal Vonn would have to win eight races in each of the next three seasons before the 2018 Olympics, where she plans to compete.

With three straight wins, her first streak since her crash in the 2013 World Championships that resulted in two knee surgeries and required her to forego the Sochi Olympics, Vonn is determined to continue skiing and winning. Although records are just outside of her reach, Vonn claims that meeting Stenmark isn’t necessarily her goal. “Mathematically, it’s definitely possible,” said Vonn. “But I do better when I am not focused on records. I want to get as many wins as I can.”

Although Vonn is out of the running for the overall championship, she has certainly left a mark in this season’s World Cup. “I solidified to myself and to everyone that I’m back,” Vonn said. “I’m not going anywhere.”
